Fo√ne…tic √Ēng…lish Pty Ltd, based in Sydney, is transforming the way people learn English by applying insights from Human Cognitive Architecture and Cognitive Load Theory —a groundbreaking approach to education developed by Professor John Sweller of the University of New South Wales (UNSW).
Our founder, Christopher Stephen, has worked closely with Professor Sweller, who is widely regarded as the originator of Cognitive Load Theory. Together, they have co-authored a paper explaining the scientific foundations of Fonetic English, making the system one of the few in the world grounded in peer-reviewed research on how humans learn.
Christopher brings over 20 years of experience in accessible publishing. He co-founded Accessible Publishing Systems Pty Ltd, creators of ReadHowYouWant.com, a site dedicated to making books available in multiple formats for people with reading challenges.
Through this work, Christopher realized a major obstacle for English learners: standard English spelling often fails to provide reliable clues to pronunciation. Learners struggle to decode unfamiliar words because the spelling system lacks consistency. Determined to solve this, he spent years developing a method that gives students clear, consistent, and simple phonetic cues—leading to the creation of Fonetic English.
Christopher holds degrees in Science (Mathematics and Physics), Economics, and Law from the University of Sydney.
